About us

Le Génie de la Bastille, an association for the diffusion and defense of contemporary art in Eastern Paris, has been developing innovative and original relationships between artists and the public since 1984.

Recognized as an association of general interest and a key player in the eastern Parisian region, Le Génie de la Bastille brings together some 90 professional visual artists from all disciplines (painting, photography, sculpture, video, installations, performances) and from all continents.

Inventor in the 80’s of the « Ateliers portes ouvertes » (Open workshops) in the Bastille district, the association perpetuates this dialogue and proximity with the public through artistic mediation, by organizing large-scale events such as its Biennale Le Génie des Jardins or Le Génie en Liberté, which was recently held from September 25 to 27, 2020 in some forty atypical places in the 11th arrondissement.

Working with cultural authorities on the status of the artist, informing and federating artists in a sector that is essentially fragmented, participating in cultural democratization from childhood onwards, underlining the importance of art in everyday life, preserving heritage and encouraging the transmission of knowledge are all part of the objectives of the association and its gallery, which opened its doors in 2014 at 126 rue de Charonne, Paris 75011.

LA GALERIE DU GENIE :

A PLACE OF ART AND SOCIAL LINK

Solo exhibitions and group events take place every week or two. Two to four openings per month punctuate the life of the gallery and the neighborhood. These convivial moments regularly mix contemporary art, music, choreography and performances.

Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 2pm to 8pm, the Gallery is above all a place of exchange and encounters, through the organization of numerous group exhibition projects, and above all, with the public that this artistic diversity invites to come back. The Gallery welcomes other collectives, in order to create encounters and crossings of artistic approaches.

Solo exhibitions are also scheduled to balance the rhythm throughout the year. They are selected by the Gallery Commission, composed of 8 artists members of the Génie de la Bastille. The result is a wide variety of exhibitions and a very favorable reception by the public, as evidenced by the attendance of our exhibitions, constantly increasing since the opening of the Gallery (120 visitors per week on average in 2020).
